EARLY SUCCESS FOR DUBLINER IN RACE TO QUINTA DO LAGO

Dubliner Peter Early saw off the challenge of 23 other golfers from across Europe to emerge victorious in Clubs to Hire’s Race to Quinta do Lago.

The competition – in association with Quinta do Lago, Irish Golfer magazine and retailer American Golf – was open to all golfers who held an official and regulated golfing union (or similar) handicap. And Early, a member at Royal Dublin GC, was one of more than 110 golfers to reduce their handicap by the desired 10 per cent before the end of September.

Those names were entered into a draw to determine the 24 grand finalists – from five different countries – who enjoyed a complimentary stay at the prestigious Portuguese resort.

The 53-year-old, who works for Aer Lingus, said: “This event was an inspiration for me to try to reduce my handicap. I started the year at 4.0 and managed to get my handicap down to 2.6. Even on days where I was not playing well and heading for a point one back, the thought of a trip to Quinta do Lago was very appealing and kept me focused. I look forward to competing again in 2019.”

As a reward for his endeavours, Early returned to Dublin the proud owner of a new TaylorMade M4 driver, while the prize for all 24 finalists included 18 holes on the Laranjal  course at Quinta do Lago, a night’s accommodation at the four-star Magnolia Golf & Wellness Hotel, complimentary club hire courtesy of Clubs to Hire, a gala dinner and prizegiving at the renowned Bovino restaurant, use of the practice range and complimentary buggies.

Clubs to Hire co-founder, Tony Judge, said: “The event was a great success and we were able to witness some very good golf. It was heartening to hear the really positive comments from the finalists who clearly really enjoyed the experience – and the opportunity to play on a world-renowned golf course.”

“We had more than over 3,000 entries of which 110 hit their target. The event is very much aimed at golfers who are keen to reduce their handicap and improve their overall game. We and our partners look forward to making the 2019 version bigger and better.”

Clubs to Hire handles more than 300,000 annual visits to its website and more than 80,000 bookings for rental clubs at 28 locations worldwide, including popular golfing regions in the USA, Thailand, Australia, South Africa and five countries across the Mediterranean, offering the latest clubs on the market, from leading brands such as TaylorMade, Callaway and Mizuno – for men and women, left- or right-handed – from just €35 per week, a potential saving of up to €125, with none of the hassle.

A CHANCE TO BE PART OF A BIG SUCCESS STORY

Europe’s largest golf club rental agency is actively searching for business partners wishing to share in the growth of one of golf’s biggest current success stories.

Clubs to Hire, which has grown year on year since its launch in 2010, is recruiting partner businesses – or entrepreneurial individuals – to act as agents in a number of popular golfing locations, including Tunisia; Kalamata, Greece; Nice and Paris, in France; Italy; the Eastern Algarve; Bulgaria; Slovenia; and specific regions in the British Isles and Spain.

And officials remain open to discussions with like-minded potential partners in other territories too.

Clubs to Hire’s co-founder, Tony Judge, believes the new scheme it is now offering to potential partners provides a great opportunity to be part of one of golf’s biggest growth markets.

He explained: “In simple terms, the scheme sees partners lease sets of Callaway or TaylorMade clubs from Clubs to Hire and rent them to its customers in its exclusive territory. We promote the partnership on the Clubs to Hire website and booking engine, and that individual, or company, is, effectively, Clubs to Hire for that region.

“What’s more, the partner can plug in immediately to the marketing expertise of Clubs to Hire and its database of more than 60,000 golfers. And, importantly, any revenue they achieve locally themselves, is theirs to keep – the revenue share only applies to bookings made through our engine.”

Judge is already in discussion with a number of top European resorts who have been quick to realise the potential financial benefits. Indeed, Clubs to Hire already works alongside Aphrodite Hills, in Cyprus, in a partnership which has proved extremely beneficial for IAGTO’s ‘European Golf Resort Of The Year 2018’.

The five-star resort’s general manager, Andrew Darker, said: “We have worked with Clubs to Hire for more than five years and, during that time, we have been able to offer our clients a first-class service on club rental.

“The Clubs to Hire brand has greatly assisted Aphrodite Hills in attracting new clients to the resort. The fact that clients can pick their hire set before they fly and avoid carrying heavy, oversize baggage to our resort is absolutely key. The partnership has worked extremely well and we look forward to growing it in the future.”

Judge added: “Since Clubs to Hire launched in 2010 it has seen consistent growth for eight consecutive years and has spawned Clubs to Buy and Clubs to Lease. At a time when much of the news around golf consists of courses closures and a fall in participation it’s great that we have a positive story to offer to people in the golf industry.

“And we have many territories we’d like to expand into if we can find the right partners.”

LEADBETTER’S STOKE PARK ‘DREAM COMES TRUE’

The legendary golf coach David Leadbetter opened his new European academy headquarters at the multi-award-winning Stoke Park Country Club & Spa  and described the venue as “one of the world’s premier golf facilities”.

Leadbetter, who has coached players to 22 Major championships and more than 100 individual worldwide tournament victories, has more than 30 academies across the globe – with Stoke Park the 13th to open in Europe.

Many of the world’s top golf coaches have gone through the Leadbetter Golf Academy certification and Stoke Park’s team of dedicated professionals has been undergoing the training programme.

West Sussex-born Leadbetter said: “We’re really excited to open our new academy at Stoke Park. Stoke Park is one of the world’s premier golf facilities, with an amazing hotel, a 27-hole golf course and a great practice facility.

“I want to thank (Stoke Park chief executive) Chester King for his vision and everybody involved for making this happen, as this is going to be our European headquarters. We’ve had academies in the UK for some time, but to have a facility such as Stoke Park really is a dream come true.

“It’s going to be a tremendous facility and we can’t wait to get started, to help the members out and really promote the game of golf in general. I know how much involvement Stoke Park has in developing young players and we look forward to being part of that as well.”

Chris Murtagh, Stoke Park’s head of instruction, leads the facility and his team of teaching professionals have been trained in the Leadbetter philosophy by coaches who have flown in from the USA.

Stoke Park’s director of golf, Stuart Collier, added: “This is wonderful news for all connected with Stoke Park, for David Leadbetter is a legend in golf coaching. Few, if any, in the world game can match his track record in golf coaching – or the success his students have achieved. The opening of his academy’s European headquarters here at Stoke Park is a further exciting development and will be of great benefit for golf in the south.”

Voted the number one golf resort in England, in the inaugural Golf World ‘Top 100 Resorts in UK & Ireland’ ranking in 2017, the historic Stoke Park – one of just two five-AA Red Star golf clubs in England – boasts 27 Harry Colt-designed holes and a thriving golf club with around 850 members.

Set within 300 acres of mid-19th century Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown-landscaped parkland, in Stoke Poges, Bucks, Stoke Park is only 35 minutes from London and seven miles from Heathrow Airport. The historic land on which it stands is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and the celebrated course played host to the PGA Matchplay in 1910 and, even more famously, the golf match between Sean Connery’s James Bond and Auric Goldfinger, in the 1964 film, Goldfinger.
