Palheiro Golf is at the forefront of the drive to promote women’s golf in the idyllic destination of Madeira after hosting a sold-out event at the start of this month in which around 80 per cent of the participants were beginners.
Held to bring together players from all over the Portuguese archipelago, the Palheiro Women’s Golf Day attracted a capacity line-up of 90 ladies of all ages including leading Portuguese actress Vanessa Martins, who was invited by the Madeira Promotion Association.
In addition to a nine-hole tournament for the more experienced players, the event featured golf clinics at four activity stations – Putting Green, Chipping Green, Driving Range and Closest to The Wine Bottle.
A meditation/yoga station was also provided to ensure that players had plenty of opportunity to relax when not hitting shots before the day of celebration was rounded off with a prize-giving ceremony, drinks and show cooking on the clubhouse terrace.
Following in the footsteps of the annual Women’s Golf Day, which this year was a week-long global celebration from May 30 to June 6, the event marks the beginning of a series of future initiatives that Palheiro Golf is planning to carry out to promote and strengthen the women's golf community in the region.
Jonathan Fletcher, president of Palheiro Golf, said: “We are committed to providing equal and exciting opportunities for women to enjoy, learn and compete in this amazing sport.
“It was a pleasure for us to host such a fun day and to bring together women from all over the region who are interested in playing our great game.
“It was particularly pleasing to see so many new players taking part, reflecting the growing desire that there is for golf from women in Madeira, and we’re looking forward to building on the success of the event in the months and years to come.”
Palheiro Golf is situated within the magnificent Palheiro Nature Estate, which is more than 200 years old, and is one of three outstanding golf venues in the archipelago of Madeira together with Clube de Golf Santo da Serra and Porto Santo Golfe.
Voted as the world’s leading island destination for the last eight years in a row at the World Travel Awards, Madeira – which is located approximately 1,000km from the European mainland and just 500km from the African continent – enjoys an amazingly mild climate with very mild average temperatures and moderate humidity, making it the perfect year-round location for a golf break.
And golfers can enjoy incredible value when they stay in an apartment or villa at Palheiro Village throughout 2023 with a range of five and seven-night golf packages bookable for parties of two to six people. Prices for a five-night break including three rounds of golf at Palheiro Golf or Clube de Golf Santo da Serra start from €460 per person, while a seven-night stay including five green fees is available from €650 per person.
