Aroeira Golf Courses, one of the most famous names in Portuguese golf, has been rewarded for a significant period of recent investment after making the biggest move in a new industry poll of Europe’s leading golf resorts – climbing up an amazing 64 places.
Nicknamed the ‘Wentworth of Lisbon’ by many observers and nestled amid tranquil natural pine forest, the iconic venue – which sits 25km south of Lisbon – rose from 100th place to number 36 in National Club Golfer magazine’s updated list of the ‘Top 100 Resorts in Continental Europe.
In addition to offering two acclaimed 18-hole golf courses – Aroeira Pines Classic, a two-time venue of the Portuguese Open, and Aroeira Challenge – the resort also features the chic Aroeira Lisbon Hotel, one of the Portuguese capital’s newest accommodation options.
Justine Board, resorts editor for National Club Golfer magazine, said: “The overall experience at Aroeira has come on leaps and bounds since the last Top 100 European Resort rankings were published. The two golf courses here have always been fantastic challenges and enjoyable tests of golf, but so much has improved away from the courses in recent years.
“The addition of the Aroeira Lisbon Hotel, just a stone's throw from the golf club, has transformed Aroeira into a bona fide "stay and play" option for golfers visiting the Lisbon area and the resort’s location is a real strength, close to both the beach and the city. We also saw big improvements in the Aroeira clubhouse, as well as in other areas all around the resort, which have seen Aroeira make the biggest move of any resort in this year's rankings.”
As well as improving the clubhouse facilities, the management team at Aroeira has invested heavily in its golf courses to ensure members and guests enjoy the best golfing experience and playing conditions possible, with further improvements planned for the future.
Alexandra Gonςalves, commercial director for Aroeira Golf Courses, said: “We are delighted to see Aroeira make such a big leap up these new rankings. A lot of hard work has gone into improving the overall package for visiting golfers since National Club Golfer last visited us, and climbing 64 places shows how much progress we've made. The introduction of the Aroeira Lisbon Hotel in 2019, followed by the more recent addition of new hotel partners in the Lisbon area, has transformed the experience we can offer golfers, and we look forward to seeing more and more head to Lisbon to try our courses in the future.”
