COSTA BRAVA TESTS OUT ROBOT GREENKEEPERS AT GOLF DE PALS

Robots are being put to the test in the Costa Brava as the destination continues its drive to reduce carbon emissions.

Golf de Pals, the oldest club in the region, has turned to science and technology to improve its course maintenance with the introduction of auto mowers, which can cover 4000 square metres in 24 hours.

With most greenkeeping machinery currently powered by diesel, it would make a significant impact in reducing the club’s carbon footprint and as the region continues to lead the way in promoting sustainability and environmental protection, other clubs are also considering making the switch.

A spokesperson for Golf de Pals said: “It is a trial period to test the efficiency and so far, it has been successful. We have been using them on the driving range and the first hole and we must consider how we replace our greenkeeping machinery in the longer term with sustainability and the environment so important.”

Golf de Pals has also taken advantage of the restrictions of the pandemic to make course improvements with new tees on seven holes and irrigation improvements.

The neighbouring La Costa Beach & Golf Resort has also joined the initiative as it replaced its entire air conditioning system to a more environmentally-friendly version, while charge points have also been installed for electric cars.

Elsewhere in the region, Empordà Golf will be installing a solar panel facility in the next few months, which will provide 25 per cent of the energy required to power the golf club and hotel. There will also be two charge points for electric vehicles as part of the project.

With nine courses in region, the Costa Brava – which means wild coast – remains as one of the most beautiful and unspoilt natural environments in Spain and Southern Europe. Situated 100 km north of Barcelona, nestling between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the waters of the Mediterranean, the historic city of Girona is at the heart of the region with its cultural and historical landmarks waiting to be explored.

The superb gastronomy and diverse nightlife also adds up to a memorable golf break, while the weather is another huge draw for visitors.
