NEW TOP-100 RANKING PUTS AROEIRA IN EUROPEAN GOLFING SPOTLIGHT

Aroeira Pines Classic’s impressive rise back to the summit of Portuguese and European golf has gained further momentum after the acclaimed layout was one of the biggest movers in a new poll of the best 100 courses in Europe.

The two-time host of the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997 has been rewarded for a sustained period of recent investment after climbing up to 77th place in Golf World’s updated list of the ‘Top 100 Golf Courses in Continental Europe’.

Operated by ORIZONTE – Portugal’s largest golf management company – and one of two 18-hole championship courses at Aroeira Golf Resort, Aroeira Pines Classic scored strongly across the six categories that venues were assessed: design, setting, memorability, playability, consistency and presentation.

Announcing its verdict, the Golf World Top 100 panel said: “A strong position for the layout, which is the better of two courses at this resort on the outskirts of Lisbon. It winds between avenues of tall pines and there is a wonderful tranquillity to a game here. Small targets and the odd water hazard keep you focused. Often underrated. It shouldn’t be.”

Nestled amid tranquil natural pine forest, Aroeira Golf Resort – which is 25km south of Lisbon – is rated among Europe’s top 50 golf resorts and has been dubbed the ‘Wentworth of Lisbon’ by many observers.

Previously known as Aroeira I before being rebranded this spring, Aroeira Pines Classic – which was designed by Frank Pennink – underwent a strict maintenance programme during the lockdown period to upgrade the condition of the tees, fairways and greens.

In addition, its clubhouse was given a fresh new look earlier this year with a modern contemporary décor, new kitchen facilities and refurbished changing rooms, while complementing the golf facilities is an array of resort accommodation including the recently-opened Aroeira Lisbon Hotel – providing the ultimate in chic modern design.

ORIZONTE commercial director, José Maria Cazal-Ribeiro, said: “Aroeira Pines Classic has a proud history having been privileged to host two Portuguese Opens, and we’re thrilled to see it given the position it deserves in this new ranking.

“It is one of Portugal’s best-known and popular golf courses and we’re confident that, with a new identity and the recent investment that we’ve made, it will continue to move on to bigger and better things in the future.”

ORIZONTE provides golfers with the opportunity to play four of the leading courses in close proximity to Lisbon in the stunning Costa Azul, together with exceptional value for money on a wide range of accommodation options.
