Exclusive two-day event marks birthdays of Portugal’s award-winning Torre and Dunas golf courses and legacy of founder Claude Berda
Spanish legend Sergio Garcia was on hand to help Terras da Comporta celebrate in style as the luxury Portuguese golf and lifestyle estate marked the anniversaries of its award-winning Torre and Dunas courses with an exclusive two-day event this month.
The European Ryder Cup star took time out from his busy tournament schedule to join a group of VIPs and specially invited guests in recognising the first and third birthdays of the Torre and Dunas layouts.
Led by Henrique Rodrigues da Silva – CEO of Vanguard Properties, the owner of Terras da Comporta – the 92-player field took part in a Shotgun-format tournament on The Torre Course, Garcia’s first major golf course design project, before the Spaniard appeared via video link to take part in a Q & A session which was live streamed.
The golfing action then switched to The Dunas Course the next day, with the players competing for the Claude Berda Cup to honour the memory and legacy of Vanguard Properties founder Claude Berda, who passed away at the end of last year. After enjoying the opportunity to play David McLay-Kidd’s internationally acclaimed layout, the exclusive annual event was brought to a close with a glittering dinner and prize-giving ceremony.
Henrique Rodrigues da Silva, CEO of Vanguard Properties, said: “It was a pleasure to bring together friends, partners and special guests to celebrate the continued development of Terras da Comporta and the amazing legacy left by Claude Berda. The Dunas and Torre courses represent a significant achievement in our vision to create an outstanding golf and lifestyle destination in Portugal, combining world-class design with a deep respect for the natural environment.
“Having Sergio Garcia join us to celebrate The Torre Course, which reflects his own passion for golf course design, made the occasion particularly special. We are proud of what has been achieved so far and remain committed to realising the full potential of Terras da Comporta as a destination that will attract golfers and visitors from around the world.”
Located one hour south of Lisbon, The Dunas Course and The Torre Course are situated in a secluded setting on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve and have been built using the highest sustainable practices.
Created over 84 hectares of natural, sandy terrain, The Dunas Course – McLay Kidd’s first course in mainland Europe – measures 6,646 metres off the back tees and has won global praise since being launched in 2023. The Torre Course was inspired by Garcia’s love of Real Club Valderrama and was officially inaugurated in October 2025.
Both courses have already been recognised by the golf industry with an array of leading accolades, including The Dunas Course being ranked as Portugal’s new number one by both Golf Digest magazine and Top100GolfCourses.com and The Torre Course being named as the ‘World’s Best New Course’ at the 2025 World Golf Awards.
Rodrigo Ulrich, golf general manager for Vanguard Properties, said: “Events like this give us an opportunity to reflect on just how far we’ve come on the international golf stage in a short space of time. The Dunas Course has earned outstanding recognition for its distinctive design and natural setting, while The Torre Course has made an impressive entrance of its own, culminating in the leading accolade at last year’s World Golf Awards.
“With two distinctive championship layouts already attracting international attention and both courses busier than ever, we are excited about the future of golf at Terras da Comporta and the wider destination we are continuing to develop.”
Vanguard Properties took ownership of Terras da Comporta in 2019 and the development features two large developments: Torre, comprising 365 hectares of land, and Dunas, which occupies around 1,011 hectares.
As well as two 18-hole championship golf courses, Terras da Comporta will boast a wide range of lifestyle and sports facilities, while the development will also include an array of plots for hotels, tourist and residential condominiums.
